2 Train Robotics: Chairman's Video

January - March 2017

Form: Documentary Short
Roles: Director, Cinematographer, Editor

2 Train Robotics is Columbia University's FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team. It consists of high school students from Columbia Secondary School (my school) as well as the Morris Academy for Collaborative Studies and School for Excellence in the Morris Educational Campus. The team builds robots that compete against other teams around the country and world.

In the 2016-17 season, I helped found the 2 Train Media Team and served as creative director for the creation of several video projects, including the Chairman's Award. As FIRST describes it, the Chairman's Award is "the highest honor given at the FIRST Championship to FIRST Robotics Competition Teams, recognizing the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST."

The Chairman's Award requires teams to submit an essay, fill out a series of short answers, present in an interview, and submit a video. In past years, 2 Train Robotics has not been able to apply for the Chairman's Award because of the lack of a media team and therefore the inability to produce a video.

This past year, the newly founded 2 Train Media Team produced a video focusing on the themes of team spirit, diversity, and outreach. The video consists of interviews and various graphics and b-roll. Although we did not win the Chairman's Award, the video made this year sets a precedent and 2 Train will only grow more competitive in the future.
